Noninvasive Technologies for Diagnosing Coronary Artery Disease in Women: Comparative Effectiveness – Clinician Summary | AHRQ Effective Health Care Program

Some Noninvasive Tests Found to Excel at Detecting Coronary Artery Disease in Women

Noninvasive tests that produce images of how well the heart is functioning, such as echocardiography and single proton emission computed tomography, can accurately diagnose coronary artery disease (CAD) in women with symptoms, according to a new research review from AHRQ’s Effective Health Care Program.  These tests were more accurate than electrocardiography, which monitors heartbeats to detect restricted blood flow.  The new research review, Noninvasive Technologies for the Diagnosis of Coronary Artery Disease in Women, found there is insufficient evidence from studies to determine which clinical or demographic factors may influence the diagnostic accuracy, risk determinations, prognostic value, treatment decisions, clinical outcomes, or harms associated with these tests.

Tools Help Health Care Providers Follow Asthma Guidelines

Decision support tools, feedback and audit, and clinical pharmacy support may improve the adherence to asthma guidelines among health care providers, according to a new research review from AHRQ. Further research should evaluate other types of health care provider-targeted interventions, with a focus on standardized measures of outcomes such as missed school days or work days, more rigorous study designs, and additional cost measures. These findings and others can be found in the research review, Interventions to Modify Health Care Provider Adherence to Asthma Guidelines.

Breathing Retraining Techniques May Help Adult Asthma

A new evidence-based review from AHRQ’s Effective Health Care Program finds that complementary breathing retraining methods such as hyperventilation (over-breathing) reduction breathing, when compared to other breathing techniques, may reduce asthma symptoms and may decrease use of quick relief medications. Only minor harms were reported in these studies.Patients considering intensive asthma-focused training should not change their use of asthma medication without consulting with their medical provider.
